POOR REDS...UNITED HELD LIVERPOOL TO GOALESS DRAW
Liverpool and Manchester United shared points in a much-talked-about Premiership League ‘battle of reds’ in Anfield on Monday.
The game kicked-off with Liverpool looking to up its points and be at
par with leading Manchester City while Manchester United hoped to
secure a win to be at par with Liverpool.
Both teams, however, could not score a goal to up their points.
The first half of the game was not with so much attempts on goal, even though ManU had an upper hand, but the second half of the game saw the homeside, Liverpool increase possession and pressure on the reds.
Liverpool had several shots on target with the goalkeeper of Manchester united, David de Gea, making two major saves in the second half.
With pressure mounting on Manchester United, Liverpool came close to scoring in the 71 minute, with Coutinho bursting into life as he comes inside from the left and lets fly with a venomous 30-yard effort.
The shot appeared destined for the top-right corner, but De Gea launched himself across the goal and somehow tipped it around the post in an absolutely sensational stop.
At the 85 minute Roberto Firmino also came close to scoring, when Coutinho brilliantly flicked a pass into his path. Firmino latched on to it and again looked destined to slot past De Gea when one-on-one, but Valencia got back and produced a last-ditch tackle.
Man Of The Match
United left with a well-earned point, in what the game that Liverpool on its Facebook page described as frustrating.
Manchester United never looked like they were trying to claim anything more than a point in the game with a 65% against 35% ball possession statistics.
However, Manchester’s Ander Herrera, was exceptional again in midfield, clinching the Man of The Match award.
After the game Herrera said he was determined to win every ball to ensure that Liverpool do not hold the ball for so long in the midfield.
He also admitted that Liverpool were better side in the second half of the game highly looked forward to.
Liverpool are now at the 4th position with 17 points, two points behind Manchester City in Number one position while Manchester United have 14 points and at the 7th position. The teams have played eight games each.
Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho, said the team came to control the game and have the ball all the time, a tactic he said led to the 35% ball possession.
“There are a very good team. The game was a difficult one but it was more difficult for them than for us.
“We started well in the first half and in the second half David made two major saves.
“The atmosphere in the stadium showed their disappointment because they were waiting that it will be an easy game for them but it wasn’t,” Mourinho said in a post-match comment.
